Supporters Club has valuable longtime sponsors

The Counties Manukau Rugby Supporters Club has been fortunate to have exceptional sponsors over the years, and long-time supporters are Wrights Jewellers, Monarch Café, Pukekohe Travel.and Dave Clark Builders.

Wrights Jewellers, who celebrated 100 years in 2012 as a family business in Pukekohe have, for many years, donated the Supporters Club Player of the Day awards, mainly an engraved pewter mug.  Gary Wright, one of four rugby-mad brothers, played for Counties as a flanker, representing the union in 39 first-class matches.

The Monarch Café, owned by Dean Sheppard, has supported Counties rugby since its inception. Dean is one of a small number of fathers and sons who have represented the union. Dean’s dad, Eion Sheppard played mid-field or five-eighth under Barry Bracewell’s tenure in the1960s, while Dean was an exciting running fullback during the 1980s. The Monarch Café provides an award for “The 1st try of the Day.”

Pukekohe Travel has been a supporter of Counties rugby for many years. Owners, Jim and Eve Murphy have quietly worked behind the scenes, not only for rugby but other projects as well. Pukekohe Travel shares with the Counties Rugby Supporters Club in its Player of the Year Award, which involves a $600 travel voucher. The Player of the Year is organised by Pukekohe Travel staff member, Dave Hunt, immediate past president of the CMRFU and a current  member of the Supporters Club committee.

The late Dave Clark was always on call to do any maintenance work and was instrumental in building the viewing platforms in the stand, which have proved to be very popular with the members. He will be sadly missed by us all.
